There are two approaches to designing and building a Custom Home:
Approach 1: Work Direct with an Architect of your Choice and then Bid the project out.
Step 1: Research, interview, evaluate and contract with an Architect.
Step 2: Pay the Architect
Step 3: Dream and Design your "Wish Home"
Step 4: Pay the Architect
Step 5: Research, interview, and evaluate several builders that you would consider
Step 6: Be responsible for answering multiple builders questions over the course of several weeks while waiting for pricing.
Step 7: Meet with each builder, seperately, to review proposals. Be shocked at the price each time.
Step 8: On your own time, try to compare apples to apples on each of the proposals and generate multiple questions to multiple builders to find out what their

proposal doesn't say
Step 9: Go back to the Architect and announce a redesign to lower the cost
Step 10: Pay the Architect.
Step 11: Back to Step 6.
